Kasparov Arrested And Beaten at Protest Rally

GM Garry Kasparov Protest Rally

I just happened to catch this on the news tonight, Garry Kasparov has been reportedly arrested and sentenced to 5 days in prison by a Moscow court. According to Kasparov’s publicist,Marina Litvinovich, the former chess champion was forced to the ground and beaten by riot police.

Over the past few months, Kasparov has become very outspoken about his dislike of the Putin Regime, so this arrest doesn’t really come as a surprise. Garry is lucky that he has made it this far without any serious injury, it seems his chess fame is protecting him for now. Still, I have a bad feeling that this arrest is an ominous sign of things to come for Kasparov if he keeps attacking Putin publicly. He should consider just dropping the whole political thing and start playing chess again!

The last couple of days haven’t been so great for former World Chess Champions. Mig Greengard of the Daily Dirt reported yesterday that Bobby Fischer has been hospitalized in Reykjavik for strong signs of paranoia. We all knew that Fischer was messed up in the head, but this piece makes it sound like he is getting more and more out of touch with reality.

The World Cup in Siberia started today, and the Americans could only manage a paltry 3/9. New Englander GM Alexander Ivanov is playing against the talented David Navara, but could only manage a draw with white.. I always root for Alex when he plays outside of New England, but it’s hard to cheer for him around here since he wins basically everything. Below are the result for the Americans:

Kamsky, Gata (USA) 1/2-½ Adly, Ahmed (EGY)
Andriasian, Zaven (ARM) ½-½ Onischuk, Alexander (USA)
Kaidanov, Gregory S (USA) ½-½ Gurevich, Mikhail (TUR)
Shabalov, Alexander (USA) 0-1 Pavasovic, Dusko (SLO)
Leitao, Rafael (BRA) ½-½ Shulman, Yuri (USA)
Bareev, Evgeny (RUS) 1-0 Becerra Rivero, Julio (USA)
Kudrin, Sergey (USA) 0-1 Vallejo Pons, Francisco (ESP)
Ivanov, Alexander (USA) ½-½ Navara, David (CZE)
Roiz, Michael (ISR) ½-½ Akobian, Varuzhan (USA)

  • Kasparov’s a brave man. I had to groan when I read it on slashdot because literally the 2nd line of the news story was about how Kasparov had lost to Deep Blue.

Ivanov lost today, so he’s out. :(

(BTW, I like your blog theme, but I always end up seeing horizontal lines for a few minutes after reading it because of the white on black text. Hehe.)

  • Hey Erin,

Too bad Ivanov lost, I wonder if he lost on time since it seemed like a weird spot for him to resign.. The website is downright terrible where they have the live games, the button graphics on the side of the page are literally like 60k each.

Funny about the blog theme.. I really was happy with the way my design came out, much nicer than any site I’ve ever designed before.
